Welcome to April!
Happy Earth Month! And National Poetry Month!

The Garden
by Ezra Pound
Like a skein of loose silk blown against a wall
She walks by the railing of a path in Kensington Gardens,
And she is dying piece-meal
of a sort of emotional anemia.
And round about there is a rabble
Of the filthy, sturdy, unkillable infants of the very poor.
They shall inherit the earth.
In her is the end of breeding.
Her boredom is exquisite and excessive.
She would like some one to speak to her,
And is almost afraid that I
will commit that indiscretion.
Welcome to April WIFSFBA community! Since this month is National Poetry Month, I wanted to share one of my favorite poems, Ezra Pound’s The Garden. I first read this poem in a poetry class with professor Kenneth Koch back in 2001. I was lucky to have taken the last class he taught on modern poetry before he passed away in 2002. About this poem, Koch stressed the use of lofty language followed by casual, colloquial language in the same sentence, and how that reflects the theme of the poem, of upper and lower class struggle.
Koch was truly an inspirational teacher, and taught me to read poetry out loud, line by line, imagining the visuals, and to appreciate that not all poetry has to be sullen or depressing to be brilliant and that sometimes, writing a poem about joy or love or wonder and having it land can be an even more difficult task. He espoused Walt Whitman and his poetry, and reminded me of Robin Williams in Dead Poets’ Society.
April is also Earth Month, of course! And WIFSFBA would like to celebrate by highlighting filmmakers working to tell stories and documentaries about the environment and the ever growing dangers of climate change.
Here’s to wishes of new creative inspiration for one and all of your artistic endeavors this spring.

Climate HQ's Fourth Annual Earth Week Film Festival
When: Thursday April 23, 5:00-8:00pm Pacific
Where: FA 101 Coppola Theater
“Through the collaborative efforts of students, faculty, departments, programs, and staff, Climate HQ's Annual Earth Week celebrations are designed to help raise climate justice literacy, increase knowledge of climate change causes, impacts, and solutions, connect with regional organizations and activists engaged in climate justice work and showcase the groundbreaking research and creative work being done by SF State students and faculty to address critical climate-related issues.
Most importantly, Earth Week is an opportunity for community building and engagement between students, faculty, and community members, and creates spaces for attendees to see themselves engaged in the collective climate justice movement.
One key event during Earth Week that reflects our mission to engage and connect is the Annual Climate HQ Film Festival where selected student, alumni, and faculty environmentally-themed media are screened alongside a climate-justice-based feature film or series, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers.
Join us for an evening of films highlighting environmental stories, climate justice, and community voices. The screening will be followed by conversation and community connection.”

International Ocean Film Festival
When: April 2 first look & then April 10-12th, 2026
Where: Cowell Theater, Fort Mason center for Arts and Culture, San Francisco, CA
“For twenty three years, the International Ocean Film Festival has brought the wonder, urgency, and power of the ocean to the big screen. What began in 2004 as a bold vision has grown into a global platform for ocean literacy, education, and independent film that reaches audiences of all ages.
At the heart of the festival is our signature three day celebration of ocean storytelling, where breathtaking cinematography meets courageous journalism, scientific discovery, and deeply human stories from around the world. Each film is a window into the blue heart of our planet, revealing both its extraordinary beauty and the critical challenges it faces.
We believe stories change people, and people change the world. Through the power of visual storytelling, audiences are moved beyond awareness toward action. Students discover new possibilities. Families connect with the natural world. Leaders and advocates find renewed purpose. Every screening is an invitation to care more deeply and act more boldly.
As a year round ocean conservation organization, IOFF continues the conversation far beyond the festival stage. We present ocean inspired films throughout the year, followed by engaging conversations with filmmakers, scientists, and leading experts who are shaping the future of our seas. These moments spark dialogue, deepen understanding, and build a community committed to solutions.
The 23rd Annual International Ocean Film Festival begins with First Look on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.
Opening Night and the full three-day film festival take place April 10–12, 2026, at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco.
The full program will be available on February 25, 2026.
Tickets go on sale March 1, 2026.
We invite you to mark your calendar and be part of this powerful celebration of ocean storytelling.
Join us in celebrating twenty three years of impact, inspiration, and ocean advocacy. Together, through film and shared experience, we can protect what sustains us all and ensure a thriving ocean for generations to come.”

genARTS Silicon Valley - Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month
“April 2026 is the EIGHTH Annual Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month (ACCM) in the State of California. The California-based arts advocacy organization CA for the Arts leads efforts year-round to keep arts and arts work accessible across the state and, every April, "directs this annual month-long spotlight on the arts to raise visibility and awareness about the value of [the arts and culture] sector, to empower arts advocates to take action, and to spur greater investments in our industry and workforce." Check out CA for the Arts' free toolkits, informational webinar recordings, and other resources on their website or your preferred social media platform. Upcoming ACCM events from CA for the Arts include: Get Ready to Advocate webinar on April 1st, Arts & Culture Summit April 19th and 20th, and Arts Advocacy Day on April 21st.
Did you know?
The State of California recognizes artists as second responders. The California Senate passed a resolution to officially honor this essential role of arts and culture workers in July 2021. Arts and culture workers do much more than make and create impact that 'meets the eye' (or ear!). Artists communicate what cannot be expressed by other means. Artists heal. Artists hold space. Art translates and transports, transcribes and transcends. Art builds bridges and breaks boundaries. The theme of Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month 2026 is #JoyActionPower. What craft will you take on this month with your own joy, action, and power in mind? What is one thing that you feel inspired to do to spark joy, action, and or power in someone else?
About genARTS: genARTS Silicon Valley is dedicated to assembling, supporting, and empowering a thriving community of arts and culture leaders who are prepared to guide and serve this region’s arts and culture community of tomorrow.”
Letter from the President
Dear WIFSFBA community,
April is a month of renewal and reflection—celebrating spring and Earth Month while honoring creativity, culture, and community. It encompasses National Poetry, Jazz Appreciation, and Arab American Heritage Month, alongside Autism Acceptance, Sexual Assault Awareness, Stress Awareness, and National Garden Month. With observances like Passover and Easter, April invites growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to both humanity and the world around us—and marks the beginning of spring.
Spring feels close now. When I open my windows, I can smell the jasmine in the air—a quiet reminder that something new is already unfolding. The days are warmer, the nights still a little cool, and there’s a gentle sense that it’s time to begin again.
And in that same spirit, I found myself last month in Washington, D.C., on one of those rare, perfect like spring days—where everything feels aligned, and something meaningful is about to unfold.
I want to share with you my experience from that day—on one of those perfect spring days in Washington, D.C., where the light felt different and the air sat at a gentle 75°, just after the city had come through a winter bomb cyclone. It felt like a gift. From the very beginning, everything aligned, and we felt completely blessed.
We felt completely blessed, and yet, as we drove through Washington, we could sense that something was different. The streets were unusually still—almost empty. There were no people walking, no movement—just a quiet that felt both striking and profound.
The war in the Middle East had just begun, and there was a visible military presence on nearly every corner, with streets blocked that we would normally walk without a second thought. It felt eerily still, and it stirred a deep sadness in me—thinking of the pain and suffering unfolding across the world.
And then, the next day was March 13.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, I had the profound honor of screening The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & The Art of Survival at the National Museum of Women in the Arts—the first museum in the world dedicated solely to championing women through the arts, and one that continues to lead with vision, purpose, and impact—to a sold-out audience. It was a powerful and moving experience—an evening that affirmed the importance of women’s voices, storytelling, and the enduring impact of art.
Being in that museum, surrounded by the work and legacy of so many extraordinary women who came before me, was something I will never forget. There was a presence in those rooms—a quiet strength, a kind of light—that I could feel all around me. To stand there, to share our film within those walls where so many other women had come before me and led the way. It felt deeply meaningful. It was one of the greatest honors of my life.
And within that experience, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the extraordinary support of the museum staff, the audience, and the Polish Embassy—along with the diplomats who continue to champion independent film and women’s stories on a global stage—and for that, I will forever be grateful.
And what is still to come—I find myself reflecting on how timely this film has become. The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & The Art of Survival speaks to a life shaped by upheaval, resilience, and reinvention. Tamara lived through two world wars and lost her country to fascism, yet she continued to create, to evolve, and to survive. In this moment in history, as conflict unfolds across the world, her story feels more urgent and more relevant than ever.
And lastly, in the spirit of National Poetry Month, I would like to share these poems:
Instructions Before Visiting Earth
By James McRae
In the event that you wake up
and find your soul separated from source
and manifest into material form,
don’t panic.
Your condition is only temporary.
You have been selected for the
opportunity of human incarnation.
This 3D simulation is designed
to break up the monotony of eternity
by giving you a fully immersive
experience as a distinct ego identity.
Your body will serve
as your physical avatar as you
navigate a dense and dramatic reality.
There will be many distractions
causing you to forget your true nature
and origin. You will experience
a range of emotions, from joy
to loneliness to despair.
But remember – no matter
what trials and traumas you encounter,
your soul remains perfectly safe.
At times you may feel lost or afraid.
This is totally normal.
If you ever need guidance,
simply slow down your busy mind
and bring your awareness
to the quiet place
inside yourself.
On this planet, nothing is permanent.
People and things will come and go.
You will fall in love and form sentimental attachments
only to lose everything you hold dear.
So cling to nothing too tightly, even yourself,
and when it’s time to let go, let go with grace,
for nothing is owned, only borrowed.
As you walk among
the people on the planet,
try to be a good guest.
Tread lightly. Remember
that you are only visiting.
Don’t make a mess.
Listen more than you speak.
Give more than you take.
Don’t keep your soft heart
locked inside a glass cage,
protected from wear and tear.
You’ll never make it out alive
and time passes quickly.
So come back with some battle scars
and good stories to tell.
The Light of Gratitude
By Julie Rubio
Gratitude, for me, is not quiet.
It breathes and rises within me like light from the sun.
I did not build it or make it,
yet somehow it was given to me.
It lives in the small places—
a morning that begins again,
a voice that answers back,
a hand that reaches without asking why.
I have learned that nothing is promised,
and still, so much good comes to me.
Moments of beauty,
people who stay,
dreams that take shape in spite of doubt.
I am grateful for the work—
the long days, the uncertain paths,
the courage it takes to begin again and again and again.
For the stories that find me,
and the strength to carry them through.
I am grateful for those who believe in me,
who show up, who lift, who see me.
Who remind me that we do not create alone,
even when it feels that way.
And for the quiet in between—
the breath, my eyes, my voice, the ability to pause, the knowing
that even here, even now,
there is something sacred in simply continuing.
So I say thank you—
not just for what is easy,
but for what has shaped me,
for what has stayed,
and for what is still to come.
I hope you all have a beautiful month ahead. As spring reminds us quietly, gently there is always a return to light.
Wishing you all much beautiful light.
Warmly,
Julie Rubio

WIFSFBA Member Audrey McClain’s poem My Father Told Me
Also in honor of National Poetry month, we wanted to share Audrey McClain’s poem here with our readers. Audrey is a 23 year old artist from Louisville, Kentucky. Her poem, My Father Told Me, is inspired by her southern father’s advice about growing up and letting life’s challenges come and go. Thanks for sharing Audrey!
My Father Told Me
By Audrey McClain
Darlin, the time will pass.
But you can’t push a cloud or rush the moon.
Your mother’s cries, and all that’s wise, is packed right into you.
Honey, you’re our livin heirloom.
So don’t go borrowin trouble that ain’t yours.
And don’t go spillin what you can’t wash out.
Enjoy the simple, and all that ain’t too loud.
The wounds in our mouths heal the fastest cus that’s where all the talkin comes from.
So tell me when the bottles too big and you need some help sippin,
Or when the chain pulls short and you can’t make the distance.
I love you slow. And I will love you long.
Let’s break all the bread in the world and sit till our bottoms bruise.
And remember,
The sky won’t turn orange if it ain’t never been blue.

As has been the case for most things in Courtney’s life, writing her first script “just happened.” She took her love of international novels, and coupled it with her deep understanding of how impactful words can be, and hammered out her first dramatic script in 2024. While she came to writing “later in life,” she looks forward to contributing fresh ideas and different perspectives to the industry in meaningful ways.
Courtney leverages her International Peace and Conflict degree, and her years of diplomatic credentials to convey stories that help people connect to the world around them. She aspires to write films and K-dramas that mesh Korean/Asian storytelling elements with western style screenplay writing, in order to find a broader base of viewers to share her stories with.
Courtney has written a total of 7 screenplays, and has placed in 14 international writing competitions, showcasing her unique voice as a storyteller.

Workshops/Classes
Workshops with Sara Elizabeth Timmins from Life Out Loud Films
One of our former speakers Sara Elizabeth from Life Out Loud Films has two Intensives in April that both sound like great opportunities. They are both designed to offer filmmakers personal 1:1 support—one focused on workshopping their pitch and another helping filmmakers prepare for Cannes. Both are limited to small groups to ensure personalized attention for everyone.
The Filmmaker Pitch Intensive: A 6 Week Workshop to Build Your Pitch

All the sessions will be recorded in case you can't make it live

“Your pitch is the single thing standing between your project and actually getting made. You use it every time you talk to investors, actors, production companies, or sales agents — basically every opportunity to move your film forward.
But a strong pitch isn’t just knowing your story.
It’s knowing how to talk about it in a way that hooks the listener, makes them ask for the script or materials, and creates an emotional response. Your pitch is both a marketing tool and an art, because the way you present an idea can shape how powerful it feels.
And most filmmakers rarely get the time to really work on that.
So this spring we’re opening a 6-Week Pitch Intensive with Sara Elizabeth, designed to give filmmakers the space to workshop, refine, and strengthen the way they present their projects.
Over the 6 weeks, you’ll:
→ Refine your logline and identify the comparables that place your project in context
→ Explore the deeper “why” behind your story — why this project matters to you and why now is the right time to tell it
→ Uncover your project’s unique pitch hook
→ Workshop the themes that give your story emotional resonance
→ Practice delivering each element with clarity and confidence
→ Learn pitching techniques to manage nerves, strengthen your mindset, and improve your delivery”
Take the space to craft your best pitch yet — and make sure it lands every time someone asks about your project. We’d love to work with you and watch your project come to life in a confident, compelling pitch.
